Lauda Musicam Chamber Ensembles
Lauda members may participate in one or more of our chamber ensembles. Each of these groups meets outside of the regular Renaissance Band rehearsal time. Each of these groups requires an audition and members must show a level of proficiency on the instruments used. Chamber ensemble members must participate in either the Renaissance Band or the Baroque Orchestra. Click here to find out more about our central ensemble, the Renaissance Band.
Flute Ensemble
The Lauda Musicam Flute Ensemble performs on a matched set of Boaz Berney Renaissance flutes. This ensemble is coached by Brittany Salkill and is open to musicians who already play at a proficient performance level on modern or early flutes. The ensemble uses treble, tenor, and bass flutes.
Capped Reed Ensemble
In 2025, Lauda Musicam of Atlanta purchased a large set of crumhorns and cornamusen made by Jens Gützel and Stefanie Hübner. This ensemble is coached by Barbara Bowman and Jody Miller. Members play crumhorns, cornamusen, Kelhorns, and other capped reed instruments.
Viola da Gamba Ensemble
Lauda Musicam’s Viola da Gamba ensemble is open to viol players with prior experience. Ensemble members play treble, tenor, or bass viola da gamba. This ensemble is coached by Liz Thomas and Dana Duncan-Davis.
Loud Band
The Loud Band can include cornetto, sackbut, shawm, dulcian, or other instruments that were used in performing outdoor music during the Renaissance period. A demonstrated ability to play these instruments is required. This ensemble is coached by Barbara Stark and David Lawrence.
Baroque Orchestra
Lauda Musicam’s Baroque Orchestra was created in 2025 to give players a chance to play chamber music of the 17th and 18th centuries. Modeled on the orchestra prior to Mozart’s time, the instrumention is a full string section of violin, viola, cello, viola da gamba, and bass. The wind sections consists of pairs of flutes, oboes, and recorders, along with a bassoon. Harpsichord and organ join the bassoon, cello, viola da gamba, and bass to make up the basso continuo section, the true heartbeat of any Baroque orchestra.
We perform tuned to a=415, about a half step lower than a=440. String players play with gut strings and Baroque bows. In generally, we adhere to the concept of being a “HIP” orchestra (“historically informed practice”). Some wind instruments may be available, but musicians are generally expected to have their own instruments.
The Baroque Orchestra is an auditioned ensemble with a limited number of openings. To arrange an audition, contact the Music Director.
